Volunteering while reaching up in worship

There are many ways to get involved at OSL. Whether you have a little time or a lot of time, there is always a need. You can choose to volunteer on a regular schedule or help out as needs arise.

To learn more about each of these opportunities or volunteer please contact the Ministry Coordinator.

Serving during Worship

  • Ushers - provide organization for each service by preparing the Hymn board, passing out bulletins, great visitors, passing the offering plate, and providing direction during communion. Any confirmed member can serve as an usher.

  • Lay Readers - The lay reader reads the first and second lesson, usually the Old Testament and Epistle during the service.

  • Projectionist - This volunteer runs the slides for service.  any adult and students in 8th grade and above may volunteer for this.

  • Acolytes - Members of the Confirmation class light the candles before service and extinguish them after. They also collect the prayer request cards and deliver the offerings to the pastor.

  • Communion Assistants - Individuals assist the Pastor and Elder of the Day with distributing the Sacrament during service.

  • Nursery Helpers - The nursery is for children 4 and under. Volunteers care for the children during the services. They also make sure the room is straightened up after service. (Parents of the children must do diaper changing) There is a pager system in the nursery so that volunteers can easily contact the parent when there is a need to do so.

All of the above positions are scheduled on a rotating basis depending on the individual's availability.

Supporting the worship service

  • Communion Set-up and Takedown:  Pour wine into cups, set out wafers, and set out on the altar; wash communion ware after service. Change the Eternal Candle and change the paraments to the correct color. This is usually done on Saturday mornings, with clean-up happening after 2nd service on Sundays.

  • Offering Counters:  Teams of volunteers help count the offering and record envelope numbers to assist the Financial Giving Secretary.

Spiritual Education for Our Children

  • Cradle Roll - This volunteer maintains a list of infants until 3rd birthday. Sends mailings (brochures/gifts/cards) to families of those being baptized and at different occasions up to 3 years old. Pray for the children and the families.

  • FaithQuest - OSl "Sunday School" meets each Sunday from 9:00-10:15, between mid-September to Mid-June. This is an exciting adventure for children ages 3 to 5th grade  There are different levels of volunteering in FaithQuest. People are needed to lead the bible lesson, a person to lead the groups in a game or activity and another volunteer organizes a craft to be done. Lastly, volunteers act as crew leaders supporting the children during each activity. A planned curriculum is provided to all the volunteers by the FaithQuest Coordinator.
