Devotional Writings

Here are some books and materials that I use from time to time to “stoke the flame of The Spirit within.” Many of these writings are themselves meditations on God’s Word and serve to turn my heart to God and His Word. Some help me to focus or inspire my times of prayer.

The Book of Concord Foundational Documents; the confessions of the Lutheran Church. These ten documents are an exposition of the core teachings of Scripture written to clarify and even correct errors in belief and practice that have plagued the Church at different times.

Meditations on Divine Mercy A powerful and beautiful collection of prayers written by Johann Gerhard (1582-1637)

Hymns from The Lutheran Service Book The classic hymns and liturgy of our church-body. Great to sing with others, great to sing, read, and pray personally.

Why Pray? Great little book on a life-style of prayer.

The Power of a Praying Husband Guidance on how to pray for your wife; suggested topics and themes, sample prayers.

The Treasury of David Reflections and studies on the Psalms by C.H. Spurgeon

A Violent Grace Reflections on the passion of Jesus Christ by musician, Michale Card

A Diary of Private Prayer (Baillie)

Psalms: The Prayer Book of the Bible (Bonhoeffer)
